3 Lecture Credits

Featured presenter(s): Dr. Terrence thines

Under a new Public Health Law, dentists in New York State who have a current Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) number must take an opioid prescribing/pain management continuing education course by July 1, 2017.

NYS Requirements for Prescribing Opioid Drugs, developed by Dr. Terrence Thines and presented by the New York State Dental Foundation, has been approved by the New York State Department of Health’s Bureau of Narcotics Enforcement to satisfy the new mandate. The online course is now available starting Wednesday, February 2.

The course can be counted towards the 60 hours of regular continuing education required for dental licensure.

According to Lance Plunkett, NYSDA General Counsel, “This course is required for those with current DEA numbers in order to maintain their dental licenses in good standing in New York. The Foundation’s online course meets all criteria for this educational requirement and has been designed especially for dentists.”

The new law requires that coursework or training must include the following eight topics:

  • State and federal requirements for prescribing controlled substances;
  • Pain management;
  • Appropriate prescribing;
  • Managing acute pain;
  • Palliative medicine;
  • Prevention, screening and signs of addiction;
  • Responses to abuse and addiction, and
  • End of life care.

To reiterate, this approved online course must be taken by the deadline of July 1, 2017., and again every three years after that date.
