Any Continuing Education "Self/Home Study" credits earned prior to January 1, 2023 will count towards your 60 credit hours required for licensure if that falls during your registration period as long as it is taken from a Department-approved provider and is in an acceptable subject area for the specific profession. Important CE Reminder for Dentists Taking MCE CoursesIn order to receive credit for NYS mandatory continuing education purposes, you must make sure that the entity sponsoring a continuing education course is approved to provide MCE credit by NYSDA, NYSED, ADA CERP, or AGD PACE.

For several years, NYSDA has been filing and financing the ADA CERP Extended Approval Process (EAP) for all NYSDA components except New York County Dental Society and the Second District Dental Society.
In order to continue to provide this valuable service to both NYSDA components and membership, it is absolutely imperative that all courses adhere to the standards set forth by ADA CERP.
ADA CERP EAP
Recognized sponsors of continuing education under NYSDA’s EAP must abide by ADA CERP guidelines. It is NYSDA’s obligation to be certain that components adhere to the general CERP procedures and the EAP guidelines.
Approved NYSDA EAP components must:
It should also be noted that components cannot umbrella other groups under their CERP recognition.
Another avenue of CE recognition is available outside of the ADA CERP EAP and that is directly with the State Education Department, as described below.
NYS EDUCATION DEPARTMENT CE LAW
NYSDA is approved by the New York State Education Department (SED) as a recognized sponsors of continuing education, as are entities approved by either ADA CERP or by NYSDA (NYSDA has only approved its components and the New York State Dental Foundation). Other groups must formally apply to SED to be recognized as sponsors, which status SED may or may not grant. SED does not automatically recognize study clubs as providers of CE. While NYSDA and ADA CERP are empowered SED to recognize other entities as sponsors, components do not have that power. A component may not recognize a study club as a sponsor of CE. Therefore, if a course provided by a study club is to receive SED recognition, it must be done under the sponsorship of the component dental society, NYSDA, or the New York State Dental Foundation, or be its own ADA CERP-approved entity. In other words, the component would be listed as the course sponsor. In these instances, components now have the requirement to: 1) review the course content prior to presentation in order to make certain that it is a valid continuing education course; 2) maintain control over the physical arrangements for the course; 3) track attendance of the dentists taking the course, and 4) keep the appropriate records required by the SED as a sponsor of the course. (Appropriate records are as follows: official letter or certificate of completion from the component containing course attendee’s name and ADA #; course sponsor; course title and code; course date(s) and location; type of course, and number of credit hours; name and curriculum vitae of faculty; record of attendance; outline of course instructions.) NYSDA will not be responsible for these courses, but the component will be directly responsible for providing such documentation to the SED, if requested.
