Giving Tuesday = Opportunity to Help Veterans
Giving Tuesday (November 30) presents nonprofits with the opportunity to drive a large group of people’s attention to giving to a particular cause.
This year, the New York State Dental Foundation is focusing its Giving Tuesday attention on raising money to support programs in New York State that improve the oral health of our nation’s veterans.
As part of our new Smiles for All Awards Program, the Foundation is seeking to enhance access to the plight of veterans and also people who live with disabilities, two demographic groups that, while in many ways vastly different in myriad ways, share the common denominator of inadequate access to dental treatment.
The veterans-care aspect of Smiles for All is a carryover from the Foundation’s NYS Veterans Smile program, which was initiated four years ago and seeks to connect dentists who wish to volunteer their services for a day to treat one or more veterans within their offices. Usually, dentists pick Veterans Day itself to do this community outreach, but as more and more organizations have begun to provide special programming on 11/11, many dentists have chosen to pick a different day to provide service. Regardless of what day a dentist chooses to participate in NYS Veterans Smile, or how many veterans he/she decides to treat – it’s all up to the practitioner.
