Funding guidelines

10/26/2016

9 Comments

As per Board policy, in order for a program to be considered for funding by the New York State Dental Foundation, all requests for such funding must be submitted in writing to the Foundation Board of Trustees by 1 May of the year immediately preceding the year for which funding is requested.

At present, most of the funding by the New York State Dental Foundation is directed toward Foundation initiatives. Because of the impact and growth of these programs, the Foundation anticipates that this percentage will continue to grow. Applicants are therefore asked to bear in mind that available Foundation funding can accommodate only a small fraction of the many worthwhile proposals received.

The Foundation will consider in its discretion the following criteria when reviewing each and every proposal for funding:

            Innovation               Does the grant proposal or funding request seek to achieve
                                              creative pathways to improving access, education or care?

            Broad Impact           How many people will benefit from participating in this
                                              program or be directly impacted by the project? Does the
                                              project have the potential of being replicated and impacting
                                              a larger segment of the population? Is there demonstration
                                              of a collaborative approach to solving the problem (i.e.,
                                              ensuring the active support of partners, etc.)

           Overall Merit            To what extent does the proposal enrich the population it
                                              seeks to serve?

             Sustainability          Will the program be able to sustain itself or be replicated
                                              after initial funding?

The successful proposal will demonstrate many of the following characteristics:

  • It will show collaboration across entities, including as examples agencies, academia, the profession, community stakeholders, policymakers, etc.;
  • Its benefits will positively affect as many individuals as possible;
  • It will be innovative, creative and/or show "out of the box" thinking;
  • It enhances and enriches the current situation being addressed;
  • It includes a detailed budget and could not be funded solely by other sources at the present time;
  • Its goals are clearly defined and realistic;
  • It includes measurable outcomes that are specific and detailed;
  • It is consistent with the mission of the New York State Dental Foundation, and
  • It has the potential to deliver benefits beyond the grant/request period.
