Foundation of Excellence in Community Service Award
In recognition of outstanding leadership in fostering improved oral health care for underserved and at risk populations, this year’s recipient of the Foundation of Excellence in Community Service Award goes to Dr. Dennis Mitchell.
Through his untiring advocacy, emphasizing education and prevention, Dr. Mitchell, Vice Provost for Faculty Advancement and Senior Associate Dean for Diversity, Columbia University College of Dental Medicine, has been instrumental in developing pipeline programs to bring hundreds of young scholars from underrepresented groups to the Columbia campus each summer.
Dr. Mitchell previously served as the Director of the Harlem component of the Community DentCare Network for Columbia and as Director of Research and Community Dentistry at Harlem Hospital In these capacities, he oversaw the development, implementation and evaluation of the university’s offsite dental service programs in Harlem, which is now responsible for over 20,000 patient visits annually.
