![]() The JM Murray company hosted The Children's Oral Health Institute's Lessons in a Lunch Box: Healthy Teeth Essentials & Facts About Snacks® program at Cortland County schools, Groton Elementary and Franklin S. Barry Elementary on Thursday, March 6. Ernest Dodge, President and CEO of JM Murray, remarked, "We are very aware of the challenges that face oral health education in rural communities, and we especially welcome these good will collaborations with such a dedicated partner." The strong commitment of volunteers from New York communities was clear from those helping to deliver the oral health education presentations. The Children's Oral Health Institute and several leading managers from JM Murray were all-hands-on-deck at the schools. The New York State Dental Foundation's Executive Director, Stacy McIlduff, was proud to participate along with Mayor Scott Steve of Cortland, Seven Valley Health Coalition's Catherine Wilde, and Cynthia Robillard, RDH and faculty member at SUNY Broome. Between the two elementary schools, over 250 second and third grade children, their teachers and principals were recipients of the Lessons in a Lunch Box program. Students from both schools were thrilled to receive the educational lunch box that includes a carrot-shaped travel case which contains a toothbrush, toothpaste, and dental floss inside. Mayor Scott Steve noted the importance of health literacy for rural communities, particularly in areas where access to care and resources may be limited. Administrators from both elementary schools spoke about the value of including oral health education as a part of the learning experience for children. In addition to the Lessons in a Lunch Box presentations teachers received information about how to expand on the oral health content in the classroom. Educators were encouraged to visit The Children's Oral Health Institute website to explore the lessons found in the Code Red: The Oral Health Crisis in Your Classroom publication.
