The New York State Dental Foundation partnered with Planet Smilez Inc to hold the Discovering Dentistry Symposium that offered a one-day immersive experience for 30 local high school students at Mohonasen’s Center for Advanced Technology this past Saturday. Five volunteer New York State Dental Association (NYSDA) dentists interacted with STEM students from Schenectady’s Rise High, offering a look into the daily lives of dental professionals showcasing various oral health careers. The day included hands-on workshops learning about oral-systemic health, managing traumatic dental injuries, completing dental fillings and applying orthodontic brackets. The event also featured educational sessions and culminated with a white coat ceremony. Designed to foster interest in oral health and STEM, Planet Smilez Inc aims to address workforce shortages in dentistry by inspiring the next generation of dental professionals. Together with Planet Smilez Inc’s executive team and NYSDA members Kathryn Pawlak, DDS, and Ryan Shargel, DDS, NYSDA dentists led students through the symposium. The New York State Dental Foundation assisted with event planning and on-site logistical support. Saturday marked the first-ever Planet Smilez Inc event in the Capital Region and the second event in New York. The event was made possible through the generous support of Delta Dental. Since 2023, Delta Dental has invested more than $1.7 million in programs that support developing comprehensive solutions, innovative pilots and scalable models that inspire school-aged children from a variety of backgrounds and experiences to pursue careers in oral health.
