A community- based organization committed to providing quality care to the
medically uninsured or underinsured may well be considered a “God send.” At
least that’s how many perceive St. Joseph’s Neighborhood Center, which serves
families and individuals throughout Rochester, Monroe County and seven other
surrounding counties. Sponsored by the Sisters of St. Joseph, the Center’s
mission is rooted in its tradition of uniting neighbor with neighbor and serving all
people in a manner that honors their individual dignity. From this unity, flows the
Center’s commitment to work in a collaborative spirit and atmosphere, wherein
every client’s potential is realized through quality services.
Christine Wagner, SSJ, PhD, executive director, explained, “The Center’s
volunteers respond to the needs of approximately 1,300 patient/client appointments
monthly and nearly 500 walk-ins. Over 240 volunteers log in an average of 1,000
hours a month.” Some of the services provided at no or low cost to patients
include: literacy and GED tutoring, social services advocacy, primary health care,
mental health counseling, diagnostic radiology, and, of course, dental care.
The Center’s collaborative contributions to communities captured the interest of
the New York State Dental Foundation. Eager to support volunteer dentists who
provide services, the Foundation worked closely with MLMIC to pilot a program
to underwrite malpractice insurance policies for dentists volunteering at the
Center’s dental clinics. Laura Leon, executive director for the Foundation said,
“The Center’s commitment to the community’s health care needs closely reflects
the belief of the Foundation, keeping the whole body healthy to enable individuals
to fulfill their potential. Without St. Joseph Neighborhood Center, many would go
without the health care attention they deserve.”
Lori Bowerman who served on the Center’s Board from 2005 to 2008, said,
“Once a Volunteer for St. Joseph’s, you are always a part of the family. The
mission of St. Joseph’s has never wavered. I have had the privilege to witness
the work of volunteers and staff members who are dedicated to the mission of
compressive service, training, advocacy, research and a transformation to a
healthy community. I thank the New York State Dental Foundation for its support
of such a worthy program.”
