and respiratory diseases, diabetes mellitus, HIV/AIDS, and hepatitis.

10:00 a.m. - 10:45 a.m.
CONSIDERATIONS WHEN PROVIDING DENTAL SERVICES TO
PATIENTS WITH DIABETES MELLITUS
Speaker: Ira Lamster, D.D.S., M.M.Sc.
Issues associated with dental care for diabetes mellitus patients will be discussed such as the bi-directional
relationship of diabetes mellitus, periodontal disease, and concerns about patients’ ability to tolerate dental
treatment.

10:45 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.
  BREAK

11:15 a.m. - Noon PERIODONTAL INFECTIONS AND CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE
Speaker: Panos Papapanou, D.D.S, Ph.D.
Epidemiologic studies suggest periodontitis is independently associated with  atherosclerosis and that
periodontal treatment results favorably on markers of atherosclerosis. A link between periodontitis and
atherogenesis and the pathways by which these effects are mediated will also be discussed.

Noon – 1:30 p.m.
 LUNCH

1:30 p.m. - 2:15 p.m. THE ROLE OF ORAL BACTERIA IN RESPIRATORY INFECTION:
POTENTIAL MECHANISMS AND CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS
Speaker: Frank Scannapieco, D.M.D., M.S., B.S.
An overview of hospital-acquired pneumonia, especially ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP), will be
addressed. Studies associating poor oral health and the risk of VAP will be reviewed.  The effects of oral
topical antimicrobial chlorhexidine on the oral flora of ventilated patients will be explained in detail.

2:15 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.
HIV/HVC SCREENING IN THE DENTAL SETTING
Speaker: David Reznik, D.D.S.
Oral health care workers are often first to recognize HIV symptoms but typically refer patients for HIV
testing and are often not informed of the results. The need for new public health strategy that incorporates
rapid oral fluid-based diagnostics that allow patients to learn their HIV status at the time of their dental
visit will be discussed. A similar oral fluid-based hepatitis C (HCV) screening test awaits FDA approval.

3:00 p.m. - 3:15 p.m.
 BREAK

3:15  p.m. - 4:00 p.m. SCREENING FOR PATIENT USE OF ILLICIT  SUBSTANCES
Speaker: Sharon Stancliff, M.D.
The implications of the drugs for oral health will be discussed, as well as the role of the oral health provider
in promoting drug users’ health. In order to screen for drug use it is important for oral health providers to
be knowledgeable about the substance and drug treatment. Common drugs will be described with attention
to reason for use, common adverse consequences, and the treatment of dependence. Screening and detection
techniques will be presented.

4:00 p.m. - 4:45 p.m.
THE TOBACCO USING PATIENT & THE DENTAL OFFICE
Speaker:  David A. Albert, D.D.S., M.P.H.
Periodontal disease and oral cancer are both associated with the use of tobacco. The unique opportunity for
dental professionals to play an active role in the detection, prevention, and treatment of tobacco, alcohol and
illicit drug use among their patients will be discussed. The dental team will be encouraged to incorporate
“The Five A’s” into their practice: Ask about tobacco use; Advise to stop; Assess willingness to quit; Assist
in treatment; Arrange for follow-up.
