(Nasdaq: HSIC), the largest provider of health care products and services to office-based practitioners in the combined North American and European markets, has partnered with the New York State Dental Association (NYSDA) and its Foundation (NYSDF) to create an Equipment and Supplies Donation program for eligible, nonprofit dental clinics in New York state. The initiative is part of Henry Schein's efforts to help increase access to oral health care through its global corporate citizenship program, Henry Schein Cares. To date, Henry Schein Cares, which provides resources to help community-based health professionals improve health care access and delivery, has donated millions in cash, products and services to more than 40 nonprofit organizations around the world. Henry Schein Cares' partnership with New York's dental community has enabled the company to make a multi-year commitment to helping improve the state's oral health care. Through the NYSDA and NYSDAF, Henry Schein Cares will solicit applications from eligible nonprofit dental programs. If selected, these clinics will receive awards of product donations and supplies from the Henry Schein Cares program. The NYSDAF will coordinate and solicit requests from eligible nonprofit dental clinics in early 2004. The creation of successful public-private partnerships between state agencies, global corporations and office-based practitioners can help empower the state's dental community and build a coalition committed to helping increase access to oral health care. Presently just 16,000 dentists serve an estimated population of nearly 19 million in New York. As a result, the state's oral health care community faces the daunting task of delivering effective oral care to a population with growing racial and socioeconomic diversity. Still, Henry Schein Cares' partnership with the NYSDA and NYSDF may help improve resource allocation to clinics that serve at-risk communities. In the past, Henry Schein Cares' commitment to improving children's health care led to its support and leading role in the American Dental Association (ADA)'s "Give Kids A Smile" initiative. This event mobilized more than 10,000 dentists to provide free dental treatment to more than 1 million under-served children across the country. Henry Schein Cares will assume an even larger role in the February 2004 event, and the NYSDA, through its numerous county and city affiliations, will coordinate community-based events to support outreach efforts across the state. "We have a long history as a socially responsible organization that has sponsored community-based programs throughout the world," said Stanley M. Bergman, Chairman, Chief Executive Officer and President of Henry Schein. "As a New York-based business, we believe in doing our part to not only help communities around the globe, but also to assist the people, community organizations and groups right in our backyards. Even though our business has grown from a Woodside pharmacy into a multi-billion dollar global corporation, we still hold true to our core beliefs, and our philosophy that we can do well by doing good." Henry Schein Cares' activities are wide-ranging and international, and not only work to increase access to dental care, but also to promote the well-being of the population at large. For instance, The Charles B. Rangel Community Health Center, a public clinic that provides health care services to Harlem's under-served, received thousands of free flu vaccinations from Henry Schein Cares at the start of the flu season to help alleviate outbreaks in its community. The company also supported the Center for Disease Control's (CDC) efforts to raise awareness about the importance of flu vaccination in at-risk populations, and the company donated vaccinations to local health departments around the country. Two of Henry Schein's vendor partners, Becton-Dickinson Co. and Microflex Corp., also contributed immunization supplies to assist with the vaccination efforts. The company's growing corporate citizenship and social responsibility program has worked to help improve access to health care delivery, services and information around the world for more than 70 years.
