Jarvie-Burkhart Award to be given October 12, 2007 at the New York State Dental
Foundation - Foundations of Excellence Awards Luncheon

The New York State Dental Association, recognizing the success that the Foundation has had with its Foundations of Excellence
annual awards luncheon sponsored by the New York State Dental Foundation, believes that it would be appropriate to present the
Jarvie Burkhart award at this year’s luncheon, which will be held Friday, 12 October 2007, from 12 noon to 2:00 p.m. at the St.
Regis Hotel, Two East 55th Street at Fifth Avenue, New York City.

Established in 1905, and named after former NYSDA leaders and dental pioneers, William Jarvie and Harvey Burkhart, the Jarvie-
Burkhart Award recognizes outstanding service to mankind through dentistry. It is NYSDA’s highest honor, presented in
recognition of great service "rendered mankind in the field of dentistry." Past winners include: Dr. Elliot Feinberg (1998), for his
commitment to promoting continuing education for the profession; the National Foundation of Dentistry for the Handicapped
(1992), for its efforts to increase access to dentistry to handicapped individuals, and Mr. David Kriser, Esq. (1994), whose
philanthropic endeavors included bestowing the David B. Kriser Dental Center at New York University and who established the
Institute for the Rehabilitation of Disabled Dentists.

This year’s recipient, Dr. Arthur A. Dugoni, has been the Dean of the School of Dentistry at the University of the Pacific (UOP)
since 1978 and is a former president of the American Dental Association and the American Association of Dental Schools. An
orthodontist from San Francisco, he served as Director of the American Board of Orthodontics from 1979 to 1986 and as
President in 1986. Since 2003, Dr. Dugoni has served as President of the American Dental Association Foundation. He also serves
as Honorary Chairman of Dental Education: Our Legacy – Our Future, a national effort designed to raise awareness of the
challenges facing dental education in the U.S. and to promote a culture of philanthropy within dentistry to address these issues.

Providing a listing just a mere handful of his numerous awards and honors would prove a daunting task. Anybody involved in the
profession cannot help but be aware of the legendary accomplishments of this progressive thinker, philanthropist and visionary.

Including the presentation of the Jarvie Burkhart Award to Dr. Dugoni as part of this year’s Foundations of Excellence awards
luncheon is an excellent and natural fit for both the Foundation and NYSDA, and it is indeed an honor that NYSDA has recognized
a Foundation event as being prestigious enough to represent both the ideals of the Jarvie Burkhart Award and to pay tribute to the
lifetime accomplishments of Dr. Arthur Dugoni.
