





| 2007 Foundation of Excellence Awards Luncheon October 12, 2007 This October, the New York State Dental Foundation will honor two individuals as part of its annual Foundations of Excellence Awards Luncheon. The event, which will take place October 12 at the St. Regis Hotel in New York City, has been designed to showcase the achievements of both individuals, the profession, and to raise recognition of the accomplishments, as well of the Foundation. This years honorees are: The Foundation of Excellence in Corporate Leadership Award Stanley M. Berger Chairman and CEO of Henry Schein, Inc. Stanley M. Bergman is Chairman and CEO of Henry Schein, Inc. (Nasdaq:HSIC), a Fortune 500 company and the largest distributor of dental, medical and animal health products and services to office-based healthcare practitioners in North America and Europe, with more than 11,000 employees and operations in 19 countries. Mr. Bergman serves on a number of boards in related areas including the University of Pennsylvania, New York University, the University of Witwatersand, Tel Aviv University, the Metropolitan Opera, Business Council for International Understanding, the American Dental Association and The Forsyth Institute. The Foundation of Excellence in Community Service Award Burton L. Edelstein, DDS, MPH Founding Director, Children's Dental Health Project Burton L. Edelstein, DDS, MPH, a pediatric dentist, is Professor and Chair of Social and Behavioral Sciences at Columbia University School of Dental and Oral Surgery and Professor of Health Policy and Management at Columbia's Mailman School of Public Health. He is also Founding Director of the Children's Dental Health Project, a DC-based non profit policy advisory organization that works to improve the oral health of vulnerable children. New York State Dental Association's Jarvie-Burkhart Award to be awarded at Foundation of Excellence Awards Luncheon Established in 1905, and named after former NYSDA leaders and dental pioneers, William Jarvie and Harvey Burkhart, the Jarvie- Burkhart Award recognizes outstanding service to mankind through dentistry. It is NYSDA’s highest honor, presented in recognition of great service "rendered mankind in the field of dentistry." Past winners include: Dr. Elliot Feinberg (1998), for his commitment to promoting continuing education for the profession; the National Foundation of Dentistry for the Handicapped (1992), for its efforts to increase access to dentistry to handicapped individuals, and Mr. David Kriser, Esq. (1994), whose philanthropic endeavors included bestowing the David B. Kriser Dental Center at New York University and who established the Institute for the Rehabilitation of Disabled Dentists. This year’s recipient, Dr. Arthur A. Dugoni, has been the Dean of the School of Dentistry at the University of the Pacific (UOP) since 1978 and is a former president of the American Dental Association and the American Association of Dental Schools. An orthodontist from San Francisco, he served as Director of the American Board of Orthodontics from 1979 to 1986 and as President in 1986. Since 2003, Dr. Dugoni has served as President of the American Dental Association Foundation. He also serves as Honorary Chairman of Dental Education: Our Legacy – Our Future, a national effort designed to raise awareness of the challenges facing dental education in the U.S. and to promote a culture of philanthropy within dentistry to address these issues. Providing a listing of just a mere handful of his numerous awards and honors would prove a daunting task. Anybody involved in the profession cannot help but be aware of the legendary accomplishments of this progressive thinker, philanthropist and visionary.
